PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic tensioner reducing the number of part items while securing a sufficient backlash to prevent the contraction of a plunger. SOLUTION: The hydraulic tensioner is provided with a hollow plunger 3 slidably inserted into a hole 2a in a housing 2 and having an inner space 3a that forms a fluid chamber 20 between itself and the hole 2a, with rack teeth 3b former on part of the outer periphery thereof; a spring 4 for energizing the plunger 3 in a projecting direction; a roller 72 provided in such a manner as to be movable along a sloping face 71a extending in a direction crossing the axis L of the plunger 3 and to be capable of engaging the rack teeth 3b of the plunger 3 while permitting the movement of the plunger 3 in the projecting direction and preventing the contraction of the plunger 3 as it shows a wedging effect between the sloping face 71a and the rack teeth 3b upon the contraction of the plunger 3; and a spring 73 for energizing the roller 72 in the direction in which the roller 72 engages the rack teeth 3b.
