PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide high resistance to water and material property stability over a long period and superior separating performance between molecules close in size. SOLUTION: The column packing is used for liquid chromatography and constituted of a silica gel as a base material, (a) its pore volume is 0.3-3.0 ml/g, (b) its specific surface area is 200-1000 m<SP>2</SP>/g, (c) the modal diameter (D<SB>max</SB>) of pores is <20 nm, (d) the total volume of the pores of which the diameters lie within the range of D<SB>max</SB>±20% is of≥50% of the total volume of all the pores, (e) amorphous, (f) the total percentage content of metal impurities is of≤500 ppm, (g) a chemical shift of a Q<SP>4</SP>peak in solid Si-NMR isδ(ppm), andδsatisfies the expression (-0.0705×(D<SB>max</SB>)-110.36>δ).
