PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a catalyst having a longer operating life that can accurately control reaction characteristics of olefin polymerization and can improve its catalyst activity and production efficiency when used as an olefin polymerization catalyst by supporting catalyst components in comparison with a conventional silica gel carrier. SOLUTION: The silica gel used as the catalyst carrier of olefin polymerization reaction features (a) a pore volume of 0.6-2.0 ml/g, (b) a specific surface area of 300-1,000 m<SP>2</SP>/g, (c) the mode of pore diameter (D<SB>max</SB>) <20 nm, (d) the volume ratio of pores having a diameter within (D<SB>max</SB>)±20% to the total pore volume≥50%, (e) amorphous, (f) total content of metal impurities≤500 ppm and (g)δ(ppm) fulfilling formula (I) -0.0705×(D<SB>max</SB>)-110.36>δthat represents the chemical shift of the peak Q<SP>4</SP>of solid Si-NMR.
