PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stabilize picture quality. SOLUTION: A chiral smectic liquid crystal 2 is disposed in a gap between a pair of substrates as shown in figure 1. For the chiral smectic liquid crystal 2, a liquid crystal exhibiting a phase transition sequence of an isotropic liquid phase (ISO.) - a cholesteric phase (Ch) - a chiral smectic C phase (SmC*), or an isotropic liquid phase (ISO.) - a chiral smectic C phase (SmC*) recited from the higher temperature side is used, and a rectangular wave alternating voltage is applied to the liquid crystal via electrodes 3a, 3b. Owing to the voltage application, moving ions in the liquid crystal are adsorbed on alignment layers 5a, 5b and are decreased. As a result, the picture quality is stabilized even when driving voltage application to the electrodes 3a, 3b is continued to display a picture. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
