PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a toroidal type continuously variable transmission to enable suppression of the occurrence of a speed change shock during switching of a mode. SOLUTION: The toroidal type continuously variable transmission comprises a toroidal type speed change mechanism 2; a planetary gear mechanism 3; a feedback mechanism to operate a speed change control valve 70 such that a speed change ratio between input discs 12a and 12b and output discs 13a and 13b is adjusted to a target value; a first power transmission mechanism 4 to transmit an engine power to an output shaft 6 through the planetary gear mechanism 3; clutches 140 and 141 to switch a low speed mode and a high speed mode; and a control device 160. The control device 160 suppresses a fluctuation of the speed change ratio of the speed change ratio of the toroidal type speed change mechanism 2 by controlling the speed change control valve 70 within a time in which the clutches 140 and 141 are switched when a mode is switched.
