PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cleanerless type image forming apparatus in which the mixing of colors in a developing device due to different colors of developers stuck to the surface of an image carrier at abnormal stop is effectively prevented even when the apparatus is abnormally stopped during the period of a transfer process for transferring a developer image on the image carrier to an intermediate transfer body or a transfer material.

SOLUTION: When an apparatus error occurs in image forming operation, 'instantaneous stop mode' or 'stop mode after transfer end' is selectively carried out in accordance with the sort of the apparatus error and whether the image forming operation is in a transfer process or not. Any one of apparatus initializing operation sequences is selectively carried out in accordance with whether the image forming operation at the apparatus stop immediately before the start of the apparatus initializing operation is the transfer process or not.
