PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phosphor for compact type fluorescent lamps, capable of improving lamp luminous flux, and to provide the compact type fluorescent lamp using the phosphor. SOLUTION: The compact type fluorescent lamp which improves lamp luminous flux and has a tube diameter of≤21 mm and in which electric power consumed by positive column discharge is≥500 W/m<SP>2</SP>per unit area of a fluorescent layer uses the red light-emitting phosphor represented by the formula: (Y<SB>1-a-b</SB>Gd<SB>a</SB>Eu<SB>b</SB>)<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>[0.20≤(a)≤0.52, 0.02≤(b)≤0.07] in a fluorescent layer.
