PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase amount of oxidation removable fine particles as much as possible in a particulate filter.

SOLUTION: This device is provided with particulate filter 22 having active oxygen forming agent 61 capable of emitting active oxygen for oxidation removal of fine particles contained in exhaust gas discharged from an internal combustion engine. The active oxygen forming agent includes ceria Ce and a rare earth element having an ion radius substantially equal to that of tervalent ion Ce3+of ceria.
