摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it controllable to turn on a plurality of cold cathode ray tubes by a single inverter. SOLUTION: This is a piece of backlight for a liquid crystal display using color filters for a liquid crystal panel provided with a high voltage generation means 4 capable of controlling an output, a plurality of white cold cathode ray tubes 5, 6, 7 connected with the high voltage generation means 4, and semiconductor switching means 8, 9, 10 connected in series with the respective white cold cathode ray tubes 5, 6, 7, and the backlight is controlled by combining the high voltage generation means 4 with any of the semiconductor switching means 8, 9, 10 so that when the high voltage generation means 4 is brought into the ON state, any of the semiconductor switching means 8, 9, 10 is brought into the ON state and thereby the white cathode ray tube 5, (6, 7) connected with the semiconductor switching means 8, (9, 10) in this ON state is turned on, and also the discharges of all the white cathode ray tubes 5, 6, 7 are stopped by bringing the output of the high voltage generation means 4 into the OFF state.
