The invention concerns a plasma-forming gas consisting of a ternary mixture of helium, argon and hydrogen characterised in that it contains 3 to 20 % by volume of helium, 16 to 24 % by volume of hydrogen, the remainder being argon. Said gas mixture is particularly adapted for use in plasma spraying of refractory or metal powders, in particular for producing adhesive undercoats, for protection against oxidation or wear.
