A portable storage device is provided that can be plugged directly into the IEEE 1394 (Firewire) port of a computer and in operation functions as an alternative to a magnetic disk or CD-ROM.. The device comprises an interface 2 coupled between a memory controller 3 and the connector 1. In use the memory control device 3 controls the flow of data to and from a solid state memory device 4 and the connector 1. Preferably the memory device comprises flash memory. The memory controller may also authorise access by comparing a password with one stored in memory. The device may also comprise a manually operated switch, switchable between two positions to permit or inhibit writing to the memory. |
