<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge electrode reduced in power consumption, generating stable discharge in the atmosphere and capable of suppressing the generation of X-rays by low discharge voltage. <P>SOLUTION: A hole is opened in the outside cylinder of a coaxial cylindrical discharge device and, when pulse voltage is applied across the outside cylinder and an inside shaft, a strong non-uniform electric field is generated by cylindrical effect and a strong electric field is formed around the hole bored in the cylinder to perform discharge between the circumference of the hole and the inside shaft by a pulse power supply. This discharge between the cylinder and the shaft can realize a low discharge voltage of 3-3.6 kV. The generation of X-rays can be suppressed by this low discharge voltage and, since the pulse power supply is used, the breaking of the electrode can be prevented or the deterioration thereof can be suppressed. Further, a low glow corona discharge mode wherein a discharge current is not more than 1 μA can be also generated at an electrode interval of 1 cm by a discharge voltage of 3-5 kV and the generation of X-rays is suppressed while the breaking of the electrode is not generated. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
