PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To extinguish fires within pits easily and accurately at resource recovery plants for solid wastes. SOLUTION: A foam nozzle 12 for extinguishing fires of a supply source 19 for extinguishing fires is installed above an opening 4 of the pit 3 for dumping the solid wastes thereinto and a nozzle 22 of an inert gas supply source 29 of inert gases such as CO<SB>2</SB>and N<SB>2</SB>is installed below the pit 3. In the outbreak of a fire within the pit 3, operators operate an input means 37 corresponding to the pit involved to supply fire extinguishing foams to the pit 3 involved for covering the top surfaces of combustibles such as solid wastes while filling the pit 3 with the inert gases thereby accomplishing the extinguishing of the fire easily and accurately.
