PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a composite material with a formed photocatalyst film comprising a titanium-containing oxynitride which exhibits photocatalytic activity and/or hydrophilicity upon irradiation with visible light. SOLUTION: The surface of a substrate is coated with a film of 0.01-3μm average thickness containing a titanium-containing oxide or a precursor thereof and a prescribed nitriding treatment is carried out in an atmosphere of a prescribed gas to convert the film to a photocatalyst film comprising a titanium- containing oxynitride which exhibits photocatalytic activity and/or hydrophilicity upon irradiation with visible light.
