PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid ejector in which wet bending phenomenon does not take place immediately after flushing operation, and a method for driving the liquid ejector. SOLUTION: The liquid ejector comprises a liquid ejection head ejecting a plurality of kinds of liquid drop of different volume selectively from the same nozzle opening, and a flushing control section 82 for ejecting a liquid drop from the nozzle opening by controlling the liquid ejection head in order to remove liquid thickened at the nozzle opening. The flushing control section 82 has a function for selecting an optimal one of a plurality of kinds of flushing mode depending on the degree of thickening of liquid at the nozzle opening and flushing is performed such that a plurality of kinds of liquid drop of different volume except that of largest volume are ejected in any one of the plurality of kinds of flushing mode.
