PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an economic supply source for a new biodegradable plastic.

SOLUTION: This method for producing a polyester biopolymer in an organism comprises a process for selecting an organism for expressing a gene encoding an enzyme necessary for synthesis of a polyhydroxyalkanoate, a process for transferring an isolated structural gene encoding a polyhydroxyalkanoate polymerase into the organism in combination with the control sequence of expression of the gene in the organism and a process for supplying a proper substrate for making the expressed enzyme synthesize the polyhydroxyalkanoate.
