摘要 <p>PURPOSE: A motion detecting device and method in a digital video recorder using an MPEG video compressing technique are provided to detect a motion using motion vectors generated during an MPEG video compression procedure. CONSTITUTION: A motion detecting device of a digital video recorder includes a motion estimator(3), a motion compensator(2), a frame difference calculator(12), a motion block accumulator(14), and a motion frame determination unit(15). The motion estimator estimates a motion vector with respect to a motion of an object, included in a motion detection region in a reference video frame and the current input video frame. The motion compensator calculates a motion compensation prediction error on the basis of the estimated motion vector. The frame difference calculator calculates a frame difference for a block included in the motion detection region in the reference video frame and the current input image frame. The motion block accumulator judges whether or not the block is moved on the basis of the motion compensation prediction error and frame difference to accumulate the number of motion blocks of the current input video frame. The motion frame determination unit judges whether or not there is a motion in the current input video frame based on the number of motion blocks.</p>
