PURPOSE: A method for managing sources in an ATM(Asynchronous Transfer Mode) exchange is provided to allocate a VP(Virtual Path) port to a sub-port of a logical port in case that a logical port is allocated in a PVC(Permanent Virtual Connection) and then divide and use one physical port by several protocols, thereby maintaining independence between each protocol and using effectively sources of a port maximally. CONSTITUTION: In a basic structure of an ATM exchange, one physical port is divided into several logical ports. While the physical port relates to a shape and an alarm of the exchange, the divided ports manage system resources. The corresponding logical port is classified by a VPI(Virtual Path Identifier) range. In logical ports divided from one physical port, ranges of VPI values are not overlapped. A use protocol is designated to the corresponding logical port. A user can access the corresponding designated logical port through the designated protocol. Accordingly, several protocols can perform the corresponding services through the list of logical ports allocated to the respective protocols.
