PURPOSE: A connection control method of an ATM-based mobile communication system is provided to shorten time for overall ATM connection setup by performing an SVC(Switched Virtual Circuit) setup procedure only when required. CONSTITUTION: When an ATM connection controller receives an ATM connection setup request(S1), it discriminates whether the ATM connection request is for a new call(S2). If the ATM connection request is for a new call, the ATM connection controller allocates an index of a table c(S3). If the ATM connection setup request is an ATM connection re-setup request for a pre-set call, the ATM connection controller obtains an index for referring to the table c(S4). An ATM connection control process of the ATM connection controller stores node information in the table c(S5). The ATM connection control process checks whether a VPI(Virtual Path Identifier)/VCI(Virtual Channel Identifier) has been established between corresponding nodes(S6). If the VPI/VCI has been established, the ATM connection control process checks whether a VPI/VCI has an available CID(Channel Identifier) resource(S7). If there is no VPI/VCI with an available CID resource, the ATM connection control process performs an SVC setup procedure(S8,S12,S13,S14,S15). If there is a VPI/VCI with an available CID resource, the ATM connection control process selects it and assigns a CID(S9). The table b updates information on the number of CID used for connection respective nodes for the VPI/VCI, and stores the assigned CID information and the index of a table a in the table c(S10). The table b transmits a response message to the assignment to the ATM connection control process(S11).
