PURPOSE: A system and method for generating a thumbnail image are provided to automatically generate a thumbnail image used for a video recording and reproducing system. CONSTITUTION: A system for generating a thumbnail image includes a histogram extractor(2,4) for extracting histogram of a previous image and histogram of the current image, and a stabilization judgement unit(6) for judging if the period including the images is stabilized using a difference between the extracted histograms. The system further includes a blank tester(7) for judging whether or not the images are decided as thumbnail images when the images belong to a stabilized section, and a thumbnail output unit(8) for excluding the images from generation of thumbnail images or selecting the images as the thumbnail images according to the blank test result. |
