PURPOSE: A method for encoding an OID(Object Identifier) of an SNMP(Simple Network Management Protocol) is provided to encode the OID by using similarity to a prior OID when generating an SNMP message, thereby reducing size of the SNMP message. CONSTITUTION: An SNMP starts configuring an SNMP message(S51), and checks similarity to a prior OID(S52). If parent nodes are the same between a current OID and the prior OID, the SNMP simply displays number parts up to the parent nodes from a top-level ancestor node(S53,S54). If great-grandfather nodes are the same though the parent nodes are different, the SNMP simply displays number parts up to the great-grandfather nodes from the top-level ancestor node(S55,S56). If great-great-grandfather nodes are the same, the SNMP simply displays number parts up to the great-great-grandfather nodes(S57,S58). If the similarity to the prior OID is rejected, the SNMP encodes an OID of a current node without simplifying(S59). If the prior OID is absent, the SNMP encodes the OID of the current node(S60,S61).
