PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simply and inexpensively provide a correction mechanism that optically detects an actual position of a camera (panning device) when the camera (panning device) is deviated from a control position so as to correct control position information in matching with the actual position. SOLUTION: The panning device swings a camera section 1 for picking up an image of an object in a horizontal direction, and the panning device includes: a control section 3 for supplying a drive (control) signal to a motor 2 for swinging the camera section 1; and a luminous quantity detection section (optical position detector) 4 for detecting an actual swing position of the camera section 1. The camera 1 is moved at a desired position (in a desired direction) on the basis of the control signal supplied from the control section 3 to the motor, but when the camera 1 is manually moved, the camera position information in the control section 3 is dissident with the actual camera position. In this case, the control section 3 activates the luminous quantity detection section to detect the actual camera position to match the camera position information in the control section with the detected actual camera position.
