PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a communication system for relieving burden on a user in procedures for a new electric appliance when the new electric appliance is connected to a network and another electric appliance is used from the new appliance. SOLUTION: When a TV receiver 5 is newly connected to the network 8, the TV receiver 5 broadcasts a request packet which requests the ICMP echo of another electric appliance to the network 8. Video equipment 2, an air- conditioner 3 and a refrigerator 4 respectively transmit an ICMP echo packet storing IP addresses which are assigned to each of them in response to the broadcasted request packet. The TV receiver 5 automatically registers the IP addresses stored in the ICMP echo packets and appliance types specified from each appliance ID included in each IP address. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
