PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium that is applicable to an MR head and has a slow error rate and small off-tracking. SOLUTION: In a magnetic recording medium consisting of a non-magnetic support, an undercoat layer, a magnetic layer and a back coat, the magnetic layer is made 0.30μm thick or smaller, an average surface roughness Ra 3.2 nm or smaller at the center line, and by representing the median asperity by P<SB>0</SB>and the maximum peak of the asperity by P<SB>1</SB>and the twentieth projection amount by P<SB>20</SB>, (P<SB>1</SB>-P<SB>0</SB>) is set to 30 nm or smaller and (P<SB>1</SB>-P<SB>20</SB>) is made 5 nm or smaller, more preferably 1.8 nm or smaller. By this setup, a magnetic recording medium having a small error rate can be obtained. Further, whenμ<SB>m</SB>SL represents the friction between the magnetic layer and the slider material,μ<SB>m</SB>SUS the friction between the magnetic layer and the SUS, andμBSUS the friction between the back coat and the SUS, [(μ<SB>m</SB>SL)/(μ<SB>m</SB>SUS)] is set 7 to 1.3 and [(μ<SB>m</SB>SL)/(μBSUS)] 0.8 to 1.5.
