PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin metal film magnetic recording medium, that is stabilized in traveling and friction by improving the lubricant from the point of lubricant distribution. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording medium has a thin metal film layer and a protective layer and a lubricant layer, formed in this order on one side of a non-magnetic base plate. The coverage by the lubricant layer is 65 to 75 percent. The lubricant layer is suitably made, by coating a mixture solvent obtained by mixing three kinds of solvents each selected from three groups of (1) a ketone system solvent of a boiling point of 40 to 130°C, (2) an aliphatic hydrocarbon system solvent, containing 4 to 10 carbons and (3) an alcohol system solvent containing 6 carbons or less, preferably with the mixed ratio of (1) 5 to 20 weight percent of the ketone system solvent, (2) 10 to 40 weight percent of the hydrocarbon system solution and (3) 40 to 80 weight percent of the alcohol system solution.
