PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable display in response preference mode and also display in gradation-reproducibility preference mode by a sub-field driving method. SOLUTION: One field is divided on the time base into a plurality of subfields as control units for driving pixels. A ROM 31 for code storage is stored with a code for controlling a subfield according to display data so that an on-voltage is concentrated on the former half of the subfield and a ROM 32 for code storage is stored with a code for controlling a subfield according to the display data so that the number of gradations is increased. A data encoder 30 decides whether each pixel of the display data is an edge part of a moving picture to select a code enabling display with superior response for the edge part of the moving picture and selects a code enabling display with superior gradation reproducibility for other parts from the ROMs 31 and 32. Consequently, the visibility of the moving picture is superior and representation of a still picture with many gradations becomes possible. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
