PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air ion generator that can steadily supply in the air not only a negative ion but also a positive ion that is effective to the human body and can maintain the optimum balance of the positive ion and the negative ion in the air and that is safe, and an air ion supply method. SOLUTION: This is an air ion generator 10 that comprises a discharge electrode rod 21 and a high voltage power source unit 23. When the high voltage power source unit 23 impresses a negative voltage to the discharge electrode rod 21, a negative ion is generated, and when the high voltage power source unit 23 impresses a positive voltage to the discharge electrode rod 21, a positive ion is generated. Since either of the desired air ion out of the positive ion and the negative ion can be supplied selectively in the air, the balance of the positive ion and the negative ion in the air can be adjusted to the optimum, and thereby, generation of ozone can be prevented.
