PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small sized magnetic disk device that has a plurality of magnetic head units each of which is constituted of a magnetic head, a carriage and a head driving mechanism and individually conducts recording and reproducing operations employing individual magnetic head unit. SOLUTION: In the device, a plurality of carriages, into which magnetic heads and rotation coils are respectively assembled, are stacked on a same rotation shaft 9. Moreover, a magnetic circuit is provided for the device. The circuit consists of a pair of magnets, which provide d.c. magnetic field that is made orthogonal to the rotation direction of the coils being assembled into the respective carriages, and a shield case. Furthermore, the device is provided with a plurality of positioning control sections which supply individual driving currents to the plurality of coils by the positioning control signals from a head driving control section. In the above configuration, the head driving control section individually controls the rotation operations of the plurality of carriages. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
