PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin-film type magnetic recording medium having superior electromagnetic conversion characteristics. SOLUTION: When a ferromagnetic metal layer is formed on a non-magnetic base film using a continuous oblique vapor deposition method, the lower portion of the ferromagnetic metal layer has an obliquely incident columnar particle structure, in which the angles between the lengthwise direction of the non- magnetic base film and a particle-growing direction is decreased as the lower portion is set apart from the boundary thereof (high incident-angle portion) with the non-magnetic base film and the upper portion of the ferromagnetic metal layer has an obliquely incident columnar particle structure, in which the angle between the lengthwise direction of the non-magnetic base film and the particle growing direction is increased as the upper portion thereof approaches the uppermost surface portion of the ferromagnetic metal layer (low incident-angle portion).
