PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a double-layer perpendicular magnetic recording medium manufacturable at low cost, which relates to a perpendicular magnetic recording medium where an antiferromagnetic layer is deposited adjacent on a side close to the substrate of a soft magnetic backing layer, in addition, a ferromagnetic layer having magnetic anisotropy along the radial direction or in the circumference direction is deposited on a side close to the substrate of the antiferromagnetic layer. SOLUTION: The perpendicular magnetic recording medium has a film structure, where a ferromagnetic layer 12, an antiferromagnetic layer 13, a soft magnetic backing layer 14, an intermediate layer 15, a perpendicular magnetic recording layer 16, and a protective film 17 are deposited sequentially on a substrate 11, in this order. The ferromagnetic layer 12 is deposited, using a material in which an easy magnetization axis is along the radial direction or the circumference direction, without the need for heat treatment in magnetic field or treatment during magnetization process. Since the antiferromagnetic layer 13 is deposited on the ferromagnetic layer 12, spin directions in the antiferromagnetic layer 13 can be made uniform, and thus magnetic anisotropy can be added to the soft magnetic backing layer 14 along the radial direction or circumference direction, without the heat treatment in magnetic field or any treatment during magnetization process.
