PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To read a satisfactory subject image without depending on surface states (degrees of dryness and wetness) of a subject in an image reader to be used, for example, for a fingerprint collation system. SOLUTION: The image reader 200 is provided with an image sensor part (photosensor system 201) for reading an image of the subject brought into contact with an image reading surface and for outputting its image signal, a measurement means (detection circuit 140) for measuring a resistance value of the subject (a finger 40) brought into contact with the image reading surface on its contact surface and a control means (controller 170) for changing and controlling image reading characteristics of the image sensor part in accordance with a measurement result by the measurement means.
