PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent fusion of a recording ribbon by heat generation of a thermal head, and to provide a thermal printer suitable for preventing fusion of a recording ribbon at the time of preheating. SOLUTION: A thermal head is provided movably among a recording position for recording on a recording medium, an intermediate position farther from a platen roller than the recording position for conveying the recording medium, and a withdrawal position farther from the platen roller than the intermediate position so that the thermal head is disposed at the withdrawal position at the time of preheating.
