Individuals are requested to provide information about their preferences regarding a plurality of attributes. Likewise, information regarding each of a plurality of alternatives according to the same attributes is also provided. When a plurality of individuals manifest their desire to obtain a recommendation applicable to the whole group regarding the possible alternatives, each individual's preferences for each attribute are assessed for similarity to each alternative's showing with regard to each attribute. Weigths designating the relative importance of each attribute to each individual may be used to weight the individual assessment results. The resulting individual scores for each alternative are then combined into a group result for each alternative. Thereafter, the alternatives may be sorted according to their respective group result and presented to the plurality of individuals. The presentinvention may be beneficially applied to a system for the recommendations of restaurants and the like.
