ILLUMINATOR, PROJECTOR AND DRIVING METHOD THEREFOR

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminator to be used for a projector which can present superior effects in the aspect of video expression ability or adaptability to environments for uses by changing the quantity of light incident on an optical modulation means without changing the light output intensity of a lamp.

SOLUTION: An illuminator 1 is provided with a light source 2, two fly-eye lenses 3 and 4 comprising a uniform illumination means and a shading plate 5 having openings 5a capable of approximately transmitting a plurality of light source images (partial light flux) acquired by the uniform illumination means. By moving or rotating the shading plate 5 on the basis of information from the outside, the quantity of light transmitted through the shading plate 5 can be controlled.
