PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a misfire detection device for an internal combustion engine capable of improving the accuracy and reliability of misfire detection by considering changes of ion current waveforms corresponding to changes of operating conditions of the internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: Thresholds #S1, #S2 for determining the existence of misfire are exchanged (ECU24, from S10 to S24) according to changes of operating conditions of the internal combustion engine, for example, an air-fuel ratio A/F (or engine speed NE). In the case of the engine provided with two spark plugs in a cylinder, output characteristics of a detection circuit connected to each plug are different and one of those is selected and used according to operating conditions.
