PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air conditioner controlled based on dosages of infrared ray and its operating method. SOLUTION: An infrared ray detecting sensor is attached to a horizontally rotating louver of the air conditioner installed in a room for air condition. The sensor measures the dosages of infrared ray in plural spaces of the room when the louver is driven, and the results are stored for every space. The dosages of infrared ray in the room detected during operation of the air conditioner are compared with the stored dosages, and a discharge rate of the air conditioner is adjusted based on the comparison. The infrared ray dosages of the respective spaces detected by the sensor are compared with one another, and a discharge direction of the air conditioner is adjusted based on the magnitudes of the dosages. The discharge of the air conditioner is thus automatically controlled in accordance with increase or decrease in the number of persons in the room. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
