PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal head suitable for high speed printing while saving the power by eliminating leakage failure and preventing thermal efficiency deterioration by thermal diffusion by forming a plurality of insulating layer of different materials on a heat retaining layer. SOLUTION: On a heat retaining layer 12 of a low heat conductive, conductive multi-element low oxide ceramic layer made of a compound of an Si, a plurality of transitional metals and an oxide, are laminated a first insulating layer 13 of a low heat conductive, insulating multi-element high nitrogen ceramic layer made of a compound of at least an Si, a plurality of transitional metals and a nitrogen, and a second insulating layer 14 made of a highly insulating SiO<SB>2</SB>layer or Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>layer provided on the first insulating layer 13.
