[Class 20 (iii)] [Also in Group XXV] In an operating system for windows, doors and the like, particularly. sliding windows of road vehicles operated from the intake manifold of the engine, wherein the window &c. is opened and closed by a piston and cylinder mechanism 8, 9, Fig. 1, having the fluid pressure on opposite sides of the piston normally balanced to hold the window open or closed, but unbalanced, by selective manual operation of one. of a pair of valves 14, to open or close the window, additional valve means 12 are positioned between the fluid pressure or suction supply line 13 and the pipes 15 leading from the valves 14. The additional valve means comprise two chambers 17, 18, Fig. 3, communicating through ports 19, 20 with a pipe 21 leading to the suction supply line 13. The central portion of one chamber, which can be shut off by a valve 34 from that portion containing the port 19, is connected by pipe 24 to pipe 11 leading to one end of the cylinder 9 and the central portion of the other chamber, provided with a similar valve 35, is connected to the other end of the cylinder. The valves 34, 35 are mounted on the same stems 38 as other valves 30, 32 which 'are normally closed on their seats 26, 29 by springs, but which when opened put one or other end of the cylinder 9 in communication with atmosphere through an adjustable throttle device 43, opening of one or other of the valves 30, 32 occurring simultaneously with the shutting off of the suction from pipe 21 through the closing of the corresponding valves 34, 35. Adjustment of the throttle device is controlled by handles 46 and regulates the speed of opening and closing. The portions of the chambers 17, 18 above the valves 34, 35 communicate through pipes 39, 40 with the pipes 15 leading to the operator-controlled valves 14, small orifices 50 being provided in the valves 34, 35. Depression of one or other of the valve buttons 14 admits atmospheric pressure above the valve 34 or 35 closing the same against the suction supply and simultaneously opening valve 30 or 32 to put one end of the cylinder 9 into communication with atmosphere. |
