PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive method superior in operation stability, for manufacturing a molten metal (for instance, molten pig iron). SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing molten pig iron comprises charging massive coal B from between two steps of blowports 21 and 22, while charging briquettes A of inner packaging charcoal, which are obtained by means of hot-forming mixtures consisting of coal and powdery iron ores, from the furnace top 10, to a vertical furnace 1 having the blowports 21 and 22 in the two steps in the furnace lower part 13 and the furnace middle part 12; blowing hot air E1 from the blowport 21 in the lower step, to generate gas mainly containing CO by gasifying the massive coal B; secondarily combusting the gas by blowing air from the blowport 22 in the upper step; and thereby reducing and melting the briquettes A.
