PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively produce an ester under mild conditions. SOLUTION: This method for producing the ester comprises bringing a cyclic formal compound (1,3-dioxorane, 1,3,5-trioxane, or the like) into contact with molecular oxygen in the presence of at least one compound selected from an imide unit-having imide compound represented by the general formula (I) (X is oxygen atom or hydroxyl group) and a metal compound containing the first group metal (copper or the like) in the periodic table to produce the corresponding ester (1,3-dioxoran-2-one, 1,3-dioxoran-4-one, ethylene glycol monoformate, methylene glycol monoformate, or the like).
