A material for decomposing an organic compound which comprises a reducing agent such as sodium sulfide or sodium hydrogensulfide and a metal oxide such as iron oxide or titanium oxide. The material is excellent in the ability to decompose a harmful organic compound, in particular, a highly volatile organic compound, and is less prone to environmental pollution or deterioration of soil, and further can be produced at a low cost.
