PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a premix compression self-igniting engine capable of operating with a high load similar to that of a conventional combustion engine of a spark ignition system or a diesel system and avoiding abnormal combustion even when the abnormal combustion such as knocking occurs during high-load operation, and its control method. SOLUTION: The premix compression self-igniting engine comprises a detecting means 13 (for example, a knocking sensor, an acceleration sensor or a cylinder pressure sensor) for detecting the occurrence of the abnormal combustion (for example, knocking), transmission means 19 (for example, a CVT) mounted on an output transmitting system 16 for transmitting the output of the premix compression self-igniting engine 2 to the side of a load 21, and control means 30 for controlling the speed of the premix compression self-igniting engine 2 and the amount of a fuel to be supplied thereto. The control means 30 controls the transmission means 19 (changes a speed ratio) to reduce the speed (the speed required on the side of the engine) on the side of the premix compression self-igniting engine 2 when the abnormal combustion occurs and controls to reduce the variation of the output (torque×speed) by increasing the amount of the fuel to be supplied after the speed is lowered to increase generated torque.
