In a rearward view, the longitudinal member consists of two successive sectors (I and II). Sector (I) is of constant section as against sector (II) which is reduced in section in steps towards the rear. Sector (I) extends far enough to the rear for the sector (I) to cover over the protective area in the rear boot space. The stepped reduction in sections of sector (II) takes the crash load and so preserves the sector (I) from damaging deformation.
