PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gill cover type roof tile and a method of laying the gill cover type roof tile which provide a good appearance and permits easy and definite tile laying connecting the tiles together and stably capable of withstanding strong winds such as typhoon or gust. SOLUTION: A fixed portion 11 to a roof backing F is formed at the upper edge of the tile main body 1, and a winged edge 2 having a gill cover portion 21 hangover the outer side at a lower portion is vertically provided at one side, and the inside measurement of the gill covered portion 21 is formed in a manner permitting the inner fitting of the upper edge of the tile main body 1 and an wing edge 2 connected to the upper edge in a wrapping state, a tread step 22 protruded inwardly is projected out at a lower portion on the inner surface of the gill covered portion 21, and a technical means for constituting a step on the tread step 22 of the tile main body 1 at the bottom surface of the wing edge is provided when the lower edge portion of the tile main body 1 is fitted by wrapping the upper edge and the sleeve edge 2 of the tile main body 1 located at the lower side so as to the bottom surface of the wing edge 2 of the tile main body 1 at the bottom side steps on the tread step 22 of the main body 1 of the upper side tile.
