PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an aromatic aldehyde (I), comprising reacting an aromatic compound (II), N,N-dimethylformamide and phosgene in a solvent, hydrolyzing the reaction product and then rectifying the obtained reaction mixture in a state scarcely producing a tar component, thereby enabling the acquisition of the aromatic aldehyde (I) as a distillate in a good yield. SOLUTION: This method for producing the aromatic aldehyde (I) is characterized by reacting the aromatic compound (II), the N,N-dimethylformamide and the phosgene in a halogenated aromatic hydrocarbon, hydrolyzing the reaction product and then rectifying the obtained reaction mixture. Thereby, the aromatic aldehyde (I) can be obtained as a distillate in a state scarcely producing the tar component. The halogenated aromatic hydrocarbon is preferably a chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbon. A reaction mixture obtained by simultaneously supplying and reacting the aromatic compound (II), the N,N-dimethylformamide and the phosgene in the halogenated aromatic hydrocarbon and then hydrolyzing the reaction product is desirable.
