An article (12) is coated with a multi-layer coating having the appearance of nickel. The coating comprises a nickel layer (13) on the surface of said article (12). The nickel layer (13) can be comprised of a monolithic lyaer or the nickel layer (13) can be comprised of a semi-bright nickel layer (14) and a bright nickel layer (16). Vapor deposited on the nickel layer (13) is a stack layer (32) comprised of alternating layers of refractory metal compound or refractory metal alloy compound (34) alternating with refractory metal or refractory metal alloy (36), and on said stack layer (32) is a refractory metal nitride color layer (38) where the nitrogen content of said nitride is from about 6 to about 45 atomic percent, and which is vapor deposited under relatively low pressure.
