PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal medium having suitable characteristics such as a wide nematic phase range, a low viscosity, appropriate optical anisotropy according to a display mode to be used and especially high dielectric anisotropy. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal medium comprises a dielectrically positive component A comprising a compound represented by formula I (wherein, R<SP>1</SP>is a 1-7C alkyl or the like; X<SP>1</SP>is F or a 1-4C fluorinated alkyl or a 1-4C fluorinated alkoxy; and L<SP>11</SP>, L<SP>12</SP>and L<SP>13</SP>are each H or F).
