PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for controlling a vehicle drive unit which reduces an idle stroke of an operational element which a driver can operate until a vehicle running speed is increased in excess of a speed set by a running speed control means. SOLUTION: A degree of operation (F) of the operational element (5) which the driver can operate is measured and a torque target value (S) of the drive unit (1) is formed from the degree of operation (F). The torque target value is compared with a torque set value (V) required by the running speed control means (10). Only when the target value (S) exceeds the set value (V), the torque is made closer to the target value (S) by control of the driving unit (1). At an intersection (SP') between a diagram of the target value (S) and the set value (V) required by the running speed control means (10), the diagram of the target value (S) is selected as a function of the degree of operation (F) of the operational element (5) so that a predetermined value (VW) with respect to the degree of operation (F) of the operational element (5) may not be exceeded.
