The invention concerns a free-propagation optical transmission system for at least a data digital signal (S1(t) in the atmosphere, with automatic compensation of turbulence effects. The invention is in particular applicable to optical telecommunications. The invention is characterized in that the system comprises light transmitting means (SRC) and optoelectronic detection means (DET) adapted for detection around at least a non-null specific detection frequency. The transmission means (SRC) simultaneously transmit for each signal (S1(t) to be transmitted two light waves (W0, W1) respectively at two different optical frequencies ( nu 0, nu 1), at least one of said waves being intensity modulated by said signal. The detection is then carried out at a detection frequency equal to the difference ( DELTA nu ) of said frequencies of the transmitted light waves.
