EXTENSION SYSTEM FOR PRESSURE-SENSING GUIDEWIRES

An extension system for a pressure-sensing guidewire is disclosed. The guidewire includes an elongated tubular member having a proximal end, a distal end and a lumen extending between the proxim al and distal end and a lumen extending between the proximal and distal ends. The guidewire also includes at least one opening disposed adjacent the distal end of the tubular member for providing fluid communication to the lumen. The system also includes an elongated extension member that is detachably connected to the proximal end of the tubular member.The system enables a catheter to be inserted over a pressure-sensing guidewire without removing the pressure-sensing guidewire without removing the pressure-sensing guidewire from a patient.
